Tagless Baby Clothes from Carter’s Inc. Linked to Rashes

Carter’s Inc. baby clothing has been linked to rashes found in over 400 children. The rashes were the result of allergic reactions to ink from processes linked to tagless baby clothes.

Heat transfer tags on baby clothing were initially meant to decrease irritation. The largest baby clothing retailer in the United States, Carter's Inc is dealing with some backlash after its heat transferred tagless baby clothes caused rashes in over 400 children. Affecting babies with ink allergies, the rash is a major concern for parent and stockholders alike. The 110 million garments of the fall 2007 line in particular are thought to have caused the unexpected results despite meeting quality standards before production and distribution.

While the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) typically requires a line be taken off shelves for further testing after complaints, Carter's baby clothing from fall 2007 only received cautions against purchasing with no direct action.  Baby clothing lines can stay on the shelves for years because of large initial production and slower style turnover.  After internal review, Carter's has attributed the rash to a "rare allergic reaction" and no recall has been issued.
